Austin is consistently ranked as one of America’s best cities to visit according to national publications such as US News and World Report, Money Magazine, Kiplinger and Forbes. It is considered the jewel of Texas, ideally situated in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. Located in the center of the state, Austin is roughly three hours south of Dallas; three hours west of Houston; and about 90 minutes north of San Antonio. With its steep terrain, creeks, parks and the Colorado River, Austin is an outdoor city prompting many visitors to question if they are still in Texas. Lady Bird Lake is a major recreation area for the city. Its banks are bounded by the Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail, and recreational watercraft services are offered along the lakefront portion of the trails. Austin's largest downtown park, Zilker Park is adjacent to the lake and Barton Springs - a major attraction for swimmers - flows into the lake. Much of the landscaped beauty of the parks surrounding Lady Bird Lake can be credited to the former First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, who in the 1970s focused her attention on the Town Lake Beautification Project.
Austin is famous as “The Live Music Capital of the World,” and offers world-renowned festivals such as SXSW (South by Southwest) and Austin City Limits – along with nearly 200 venues featuring rock, blues, jazz, hip hop, punk or Latino shows nightly. Austin’s universal appeal extends well beyond music however with outstanding dining experiences, world-class sporting events, an oasis of outdoor activities and other unique happenings.
